Have every participant in the lab put on the protective gear.

Obtain your sample of trash by removing the liner from a school trash can along with its contents.

Transfer each piece of waste into a heavy duty trash bag counting each piece you transfer until you have gone through every piece. This is your # total.

Tare scale or meter with an identical empty trash bag and then weigh the trash in grams. This is your mass total.

Then take out every piece of trash sorting it into recyclable, compostable, and landfill into a new trash bag for each type of waste while counting how many pieces go in each to get # recycle, # compost, and # trash. Use this video to help you sort correctly.
